—based on Psalm 119:105 I am often surprised by how God makes his good promises come true out of very messy situations – Jacob tricking Esau and Isaac for the blessing and birthright, and now this story of how much strife there is between Rachel and Leah. The scene with the mandrakes shows how much dysfunction was in that family, but those sons of Jacob born out of competition between two sisters (and their maidservants) became the 12 tribes of Israel. The story of Judah and Tamar in chapter 38 is also messy (to say the least!), but this is the same Judah and Tamar in Matthew 1:3 that God uses to ultimately bring Jesus into the world.
